GM Recall – Reference Guide

As you may know from media reports, General Motors has issued some of the largest recalls in the country. The first recall deal with a condition with the ignition switch that may cause the keys to unintentionally move or switch to the “accessory” or “off” position, turning off the engine and most of the electrical components of the vehicle.

The second recall involves more than 1.3 million vehicles in the U.S. that may experience a sudden loss of electric power steering assist. Once the power steering assist is lost the vehicles are programmed to notify the driver so that he or she can take over manually. In this instance, the driver can steer the vehicle, but those driving at low speeds face a higher the risk of a crash.

The vehicles involved in the recall include:

  1. 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalts and Pontiac G5

  2. 2003-2007 Saturn Ions, 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHRs

  3. 2006-2007 Pontiac Solstice and 2007 Saturn Sky models

  4. Chevrolet Malibu: All model year 2004 and 2005, and some model year 2006 and model year 2008 and 2009 vehicles

  5. Chevrolet HHR (Non-Turbo): Some model year 2009 and 2010 vehicles

  6. Chevrolet Cobalt: Some model year 2010 vehicles Saturn Aura: Some model year 2008 and 2009 vehicles

  7. Saturn ION: All model year 2004 to 2007 vehicles

Zero Cost Repair and Refunds

Repairs associated with the recall are done at no cost to the car owner. GM has even offered to give rentals to reduce the inconvenience of dealing with the recall which is good considering fixing the parts affected may require separate dealership visits depending on parts availability. In addition, if you paid for repairs to the parts affected by the recall you may be entitled to a refund.
