Risperdal is used to treat mental/mood disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder with the goal of restoring balance to allow users to resume a normal life. It is available as a tablet or oral solution.

The drug is manufactured by Johnson & Johnson which reached a massive $2.2 billion settlement with the government over the marketing of the drug. In the settlement, one of the largest ever, Johnson & Johnson plead guilty to a criminal misdemeanor, acknowledging that it improperly marketed Risperdal for unapproved uses.  Following the settlement, Johnson & Johnson has seen tens of thousands of lawsuits from patients who took the medication.

Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceuticals, is accused of marketing Risperdal for uses that had not being approved by the Federal Drug Administration including treatment of attention deficit disorders in children. The company did not have data to back up its claims that the drug was beneficial to children suffering those illnesses.

More shockingly, Johnson & Johnson is accused of attacking a study that found the Risperdal could lead to patients developing diabetes going as far as to publish articles that erroneously claimed that the drug can lower the risk of diabetes. It turns out that the study may have being right as plaintiff’s allege that is one of the consequences of taking the medication.
